A USB drive does not show up in Windows XP

If you have plugged a USB drive into a computer and it does not show up, do not worry! Not all is lost! More than likely it can be fixed so that it can be used on the computer that you are using. What causes the problem is that Windows does not assign drive letters in a manner in which one would expect. It has to do with being logged into Novell. Windows doesn't see the F drive as being a drive letter when it hands out new drive letters to media that is plugged in after you log into Novell. So what can you do to fix it? Follow the instructions below.

  1. Click the Windows Start button.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Type in compmgmt.msc to open the Computer Management Console.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click Disk Management in the left hand pane of the window.
  6. In the upper portion of the right window pane, you will see the disk as drive F:. Right click it.
  7. From the menu, select Chang Drive Letter and Paths….
  8. Click the Change button. A window will appear that says Enter a new drive letter or path for F:()..
  9. From the drop down menu, change it to B:.
  10. Click the OK button. You will see a window pop up that says: Changing the drive letter of a volume might cause programs to no longer run. Are you sure you want to change this drive letter?.
  11. Click the Yes. button.
  12. Close the Computer Management Console by clicking the X button in the upper right hand corner of the window.
  13. You can now access the drive as B:.
